Pros and cons of buying part worn tyres
Tyres are a crucial part of the handling and braking of a vehicle and it is imperative that you ensure your tyres are kept in a good condition and have plenty of tre left on them. Replacing the tyres on your car or van can be costly, especially if you have to replace more than one at a time. You may be able to get a deal though when buying more than one tyre, so always check if any of your other tyres are going to need to be replaced soon as it may be more cost effective to do them together. With tyres, it is not always economical to buy the cheapest tyres as they often will not last very long and you may find that you have to end up replacing them after only a few months.
You may be tempted to purchase part worn tyres, which are tyres that still have tread left on them but not the full amount. Rules in other parts of the EU state that tyres have to be changed at 3mm as opposed to 1.6 in the UK. This means these tyres can then be sold on as part-worns. The issue with part-worns is that you may only get 2 or 3 mm of tread on them and therefore they will not last much longer. If you are looking to buy part-worns, always ask how much tread is left on them and if it is less than 5mm you may be better to fork out for new.
