Car diagnostic fault finding

Categories :

If your car develops an intermittent fault or suddenly the dashboard lights up with a warning you may have to take the vehicle in to a garage to find out what the issue is. Although the warning light will often give you some indication, it is often not enough to allow you to actually found out what the root cause of the issue is.

Every modern car is fitted with an on board computer. The job of this computer is to record faults that occur within the engine and components of a vehicle such as engine temperature, electrical faults and issues with emissions. Unfortunately these codes cannot be accessed without linking the vehicle up to specialist equipment known as a diagnostic machine. Not all garages have this machinery so it is worth checking and shopping around for prices before taking the vehicle in.

Once plugged in the computer will be able to list all the fault codes that are recorded on the vehicle. This will give the mechanic a ore in depth idea as to where the fault may lie within the vehicle.

Although this may still mean further investigation work is required, it can certainly help the mechanic start to look in the right direction.
