The cost of building a garage

If you are considering having a garage built then you need to think very carefully about what type of garage you want and what your budget is. The cost of building a garage varies drastically from around five thousand pounds upwards of fifteen thousand pounds for a double detached one.

Consider why you are building a garage first, is it for somewhere to store your car or bikes or it is for extra store for lawn mowers, tools etc? If you do not need to fit your car in then you may decide to build a smaller garage to keep costs down and ensure you do not lose too much garden or driveway space.

It is also worth considering building a garage which can be extended on top of if it is attached to your house. You may be able to create a new room on top of the garage which would add another bedroom to the property. Although costly to start with this could add a substantial amount of value to your home. IF you are not planning on staying in at the house for years to come, always check with an estate agent as to how much value it would actually add before going ahead with it.

It may be that you need planning permission for some garage extensions, so always check with your local council before going ahead with any project.
